PGY-I GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The PGY-1 resident will make the transition to becoming a medical professional. The acquisition of the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes will be demonstrated by substantial completion of the goals and objectives of each clinical rotation, attendance at seminars and satisfactory performance on the PRITE and mock board examinations.

Knowledge

Differential diagnosis of medical, neurological and psychiatric disorders
Working knowledge of DSM-IV
Understand the biopsychosocial approach to patients
Patient confidentiality of ethical practice of medicine
Indication of contradictions of pharmacologic agents and  electroconvulsive therapy
Understand the AMA guidelines for accepting gifts from the industry

Skills

Develop empathic relationships with patients
Use supervision
Complete medical records and documentation requirements
Secure competent medical, psychiatric and neurological history and examinations
Function as member of a treatment team
Begin to manage multiple tasks at a time
Begin to function as physician leader in psychiatric inpatient/emergency settings
Participate in developing and implementing psychiatric treatments using the biopsychosocial model
Supervise and teach basic clinical skills to medical students
Appreciate the complexities of interacting with pharmaceutical representatives

Attitudes

Respectfully interact with patients, families and staff
Diligently discharge work task obligations
Display ability to be introspective and self-questioning
Accept responsibilities as a physician
Tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty
Thoughtfully receive and give feedback or criticism
Accept limits of knowledge and skills and request assistance
Begin to appreciate strengths and areas requiring improvement in terms of functioning as a competent physician
