I chose Brown because...
When I visited Brown as a fourth-year student, I found the residents to be smart, fun, and engaged in learning and the teaching by attendings to be exceptional. As a resident, this has continued to be the case. Without exception, residents will tell you what a joy it is to train here. The curriculum is uniformly strong in pharmacology and therapy, the training environments are diverse, and research opportunities abound for those interested. As well, Providence and the surrounding area are a stronghold for artistic expression, culinary delights, and natural beauty. This is simply a wonderful place to live and work.

I chose Brown because...
I'm originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Biology in 2000, then graduated from the University of Michigan with an M.D. in 2005, so I'm a newcomer to Rhode Island and the Northeast. If you're applying and are interested in the psychiatry residency program here, please feel free to call the residency office and ask for my email address. I can tell you why I ranked it, and what it's been like for at least the first few months so far.

Poonam Modha, M.D.

Poonam Modha

Background:
Poonam completed her undergraduate education at MIT in Biology with a concentration in anthropology in 2001. She conducted cancer research in the lab of Dr. Robert Weinberg at Whitehead Institute. In addition to participating in research and anthropological fieldwork, Poonam volunteered in the Bone Marrow Transplant and Oncology units at Childrens Hospital in Boston. While at UMass Medical school, she drew anatomical pictures, focusing on the nervous and vascular systems and also constructed a wall chart of the cranial nerves. These materials are being used as teaching tools for the first-year anatomy course. She enjoys playing several instruments, doing various styles of dance, and drawing. Although she enjoys everything about medicine, connecting with her patients is most important to her. She has had clinical experiences with developmental disabilities, chronic pain, and substance abuse and finds that each has its unique challenge to her creativity in establishing the best means to helping her patients.

About me:
Hello All! With the ordeal of the interview trail fading into the past, there are really three pearls about Brown to pass along to future applicants - . First, the residents here are fantastic- I was looking for a well-rounded group of people, with diverse interests with the time and energy to pursue them. Secondly, the city - coming from Albany NY, the Providence area is a delight, between the food, the people, and the general ambience. And for those of us who love the ocean, the water is minutes away. And lastly, if you want a program that is well-rounded, that teaches therapy as well as psychopharmacology, here's the place.
I'm certainly not the sort that was born knowing they were going to love psychiatry, but there's no other field that blends cutting edge medicine and science with social advocacy - and I'm thrilled to start my training here at Brown.
Please email me if I can be of any help - Noah_Philip@Brown.edu

About me:
Hi Everyone,
I came to Providence all the way from the Midwest. I went to college in Chicago, IL and medical school in Milwaukee,WI! My husband and I couples matched here and it has truly been a smooth transition! We interviewed all along the East Coast and felt that Brown University was the best fit for us. We actually did visiting rotations here in November of 2004 and were impressed with the staff, residents, facilities, and quality of teaching. Another thing that also stood out about Brown was the fact that the Providence community appears to have an increased awareness of mental health. There are many programs within the community to meet the needs of a diverse patient population. Providence is a great city in terms of friendly people, great restaurants, and nearby places to visit on the weekend (Boston, Newport,Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod,etc).
If you have any questions about the psychiatry program, the couples match, or interviewing, please feel free to e-mail me at Seema_Shah@brown.edu. Good luck!

About me:
I chose to come to Brown for residency after doing a visiting rotation on the consult liaison service as a fourth year medical student. My rotation at Brown was one of the best learning experiences I had during medical school. Now, I am a Brown psychiatry resident, and I know that I made the right choice. The quality of the attendings and residents reinforces that fact each day. This is an incredibly well rounded program filled with many opportunities to learn in a variety of settings. I absolutely love it here.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about the residency program.
