- To provide the Fellow with training in clinical supervision and programmatic consultation.
Fellowship Timeline
The postdoctoral fellowship appointment is for one year, starting September 1, 2007, and concluding August 31, 2008. A second year of postdoctoral training may be negotiable between the Fellow and primary supervisor.
Research and Training Activity Plan
Inpatient and Residential Specialization:
One fellow will be rotated between the child and adolescent inpatient and residential programs and at least 20% of the fellow’s time will be devoted to academic/research activities. Programmatic research opportunities may include, but are not limited to, inpatient and/or residential treatment evaluation, the assessment and treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, suicidality, firesetting, and body dysmorphic disorder. Research activities for this fellow will include:

- Review of clinical child and adolescent psychology literature: the fellow will be provided with a series of readings in the area of clinical child and adolescent psychology.
- Grant writing: the fellow will be encouraged to develop a grant proposal connected with research in the areas of developmental psychopathology and submit a grant proposal by the end of the fellowship term.

- Post-Doctoral seminars: The fellow will participate in the post-doctoral seminars through the Brown University Post Doctoral Training Program.
Clinical Activity Plan
The fellow will receive experience and training in a variety of clinical settings.
Inpatient and Residential Specialization: For the fellow assigned to the Child and Adolescent Inpatient and Residential services, clinical activities are designed to provide advanced training in the evaluation and treatment of emotionally and behaviorally disordered children and adolescents. Assessment and treatment are guided by theories of developmental psychopathology. There is an emphasis upon: a) training in the application of evidenced-based treatment, b) the integration of relational and cognitive-behavioral approaches to problems of emotion regulation in children and c) integrated family and systems conceptualizations.
Clinical activities will include the following:
- Treatment Services: The fellow will rotate between the Child and Adolescent Inpatient programs, and may also carry long-term cases on the residential programs. The fellow will be provided with opportunities to work with children who present with a lengthy history and broad range of serious behavioral and emotional disturbances, including excessive aggression; self-injury; extreme impulsivity; depressed, irritable, or unstable mood; early childhood trauma and significant relationship disturbances. Clinical activities on the inpatient programs will include individual and group therapy, psychological consultation and assessment, the development of inpatient behavioral treatment protocols. In addition there are opportunities for supervision in milieu consultation (both case-based and programmatic). On the residential programs there are opportunities for parent-child and family therapy as well as individual and group therapy, with the potential for long-term treatment and school consultation. In addition, the fellow develops residential behavioral treatment plans and supervises plan implementation by residential staff as well as coordinates with after-care providers.
- Clinical Assessment: The fellow will receive intensive training in both brief and comprehensive psychological assessment of children and adolescents. This will take place primarily on Child and Adolescent Inpatient Units.
- Training in Clinical Supervision: Fellows will have the opportunity to supervise pre-doctoral practicum students in assessment and treatment through the Bradley Hospital Psychology Externship Program.
Supervision and Evaluation
Supervision and training are the primary focus of this fellowship. The fellows will receive supervision from Drs. Barreto, Dyl, and Paccione-Dyslewski, in the form of weekly individual supervision from their program’s supervising psychologist.
At the midpoint and conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow and the supervisors are requested to provide formal self-appraisals, performance appraisals, and evaluate the program relative to the goals and learning objectives of the fellowship.
