Fellowship Aims
- To provide the fellow with broad post-doctoral training in the area of health psychology.
- To provide the fellow with a strong working knowledge of diabetes self-management, along with knowledge of other chronic disease self-management interventions.
- To provide the fellow with a strong working knowledge of cross-cultural translation of interventions and research evaluation.
- To provide the fellow with research training and experience in preparation for a research career in health behavior change intervention.
- To provide clinical service training in behavioral medicine.
Fellowship Timeline
The duration of the fellowship is 2 years, contingent upon satisfactory progress. The anticipated start date is July-September, 2006.
Research Activity Plan
The fellowship is primarily a research position. The fellow will be exposed to various aspects of diabetes care intervention research via participation in the following activities:
- Study coordination: The fellow will collaborate with the Dr. Judith DePue (Miriam-subcontract PI), Dr. Michael Goldstein (Miriam-subcontract Co-I), and Dr. Stephen McGarvey (Brown-PI) to coordinate a large clinical trial recently funded by NIDDK. The study involves use of community outreach workers to support diabetes self management within a community health center in American Samoa. 50-55% time will be devoted to study coordination duties.
- Review of literature: The fellow will develop a knowledge base in the area of diabetes self management in general and in the process of cross cultural tailoring of interventions. This will be primarily through a series of directed readings.
- Grant writing: The fellow will be encouraged to develop a grant idea and submit a grant proposal by the end of the fellowship term.
- Manuscript preparation and submission: The fellow will be encouraged to collaborate on manuscript preparation and poster submissions at national conferences. Individually tailored goals will be established in this area. 5-10% time will be allocated for manuscript-related activities, including work related to the “Diabetes Care in American Samoa” study.
- The fellow will be required to participate in bi-weekly research meetings.
- The fellow will participate in the weekly postdoctoral research seminars offered through the Brown University Post Doctoral Training Program, as well as a weekly seminar series in cardiovascular behavioral medicine. 15% time.
Clinical Activity Plan
Opportunities for additional clinical experience will be provided as part of a supervised experience through the Behavioral Medicine Clinic, at The Miriam Hospital, Coro Bldg, third floor. 15% time. It is expected that the fellow will be able to complete required hours necessary for licensure eligibility by the end of the two-year fellowship.
- Treatment services to include: weight management groups, individual weight patients, and psychotherapy with behavioral medicine patients. 4 hrs/week.
- Clinical assessment: behavioral medicine psychological assessments, weight and lifestyle evaluations. 2 hrs/week.
Seminars
Post-Doctoral Seminars: The fellow will be required to participate in the academic Friday seminars through the Brown University Training Program, and when available the behavioral medicine specific seminar. 2-4 hrs/week.
Supervision and Evaluation
Supervision will be provided in the form of weekly individual supervision (Dr. DePue for research) and (a psychologist to be named for clinical supervision), bi-weekly research team meetings (with Drs. DePue, Goldstein, and McGarvey), and group supervision (Behavioral Medicine Clinical Team meeting).
At the conclusion and midpoint of the fellowship, the fellow and the supervisors are requested to provide formal evaluations, and evaluations of the program relative to the goals and learning objectives of the fellowship.
