Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Early Childhood  (APA Approved)

Fellowship Aims

  • To provide the fellow with broad post-doctoral training in the areas of early childhood disorders, clinical consulting, evidence-based preventive interventions, and family assessment and treatment.
  • To provide the fellow with a strong working knowledge of research in developmental psychopathology.
  • To enable the fellow to gain experience consulting to community agencies serving young children (birth to five years) and their families such as Head Start and Early Head Start: facilitating multidisciplinary teams, providing staff training, and providing broad-based clinical and consulting services. 
  • To enable the fellow to gain outpatient child and family therapy skills as well as assessment skills in the areas of early childhood disorders.

Fellowship Timeline

The fellowship will initiate September 1, 2008 and conclude September 1, 2010. 

Effort is typically allocated as follows: 60% clinical consulting, 20% laboratory team research, and 20% individual research time. 

Research Activity Plan

The fellow will be exposed to various aspects of child clinical and research work.  This is achieved via participation in the following activities:

  • Study coordination:  The fellow will collaborate with the PI (Susan Dickstein, Ph.D.; Ron Seifer, Ph.D.) to coordinate longitudinal research in several areas within developmental psychopathology as well as Head Start program evaluation.
  • Review of Developmental Psychopathology and Head Start literature: The fellow will be provided with a series of readings in the areas of specific interest developed in collaboration with the fellows research mentor.
  • Evidence-Based Prevention and Intervention Seminar: The fellow will participate in a monthly seminar to discuss state-of-the-art issues and protocols related to evidence based prevention and intervention programs in early childhood
  • Grant writing: The fellow will be encouraged to develop a grant idea and submit a grant proposal by the end of the fellowship term.
  • Manuscript preparation and submission: The fellow will be encouraged to collaborate on manuscript preparation and poster submissions at national conferences.  Individually tailored goals will be established in this area. 
  • The fellow will be provided the opportunity to participate in weekly research meetings conducted at the Bradley Research Center.

Clinical Activity Plan

  • In order to ensure that the fellow receives a high level of clinical training in the area of Early Childhood, the following activities will be required during the fellowship:
  • Consulting and Intervention services: Clinical services include traditional child and family therapy through the outpatient clinic as well as clinical consulting services within community agencies such as Head Start and Early Head Start (classroom observation; consultation about child, family, and classroom issues; care management facilitation); experience will be gained in implementing empirically-validated preventive intervention protocols, including the Incredible Years Series.
  • Clinical assessment: Includes brief screening reports for community agencies, classroom assessments, family assessments for both research and clinical practice, and traditional psychological evaluations for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with a wide range of presenting issues.
  • Post-Doctoral Seminars: The fellow will be encouraged to participate in the post-doctoral seminars through the Brown University Post Doctoral Training Program.

Supervision and Evaluation

  • Clinical Supervision will be provided in the form of weekly individual supervision (Drs. Dickstein, Schiller, Low, and/or Shepard) and weekly group supervision (Drs. Low and Dickstein). Research Supervision is provided in the form of individual supervision (Drs. Shepard, Seifer, and/or Dickstein) and group supervision (Drs. Seifer, Dickstein, and Shepard).
  • At the conclusion and midpoint of the fellowship, the fellow and the supervisors are requested to provide formal evaluations, and evaluations of the program relative to the goals and learning objectives of the fellowship.
