Post Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Psychology/GI Disorders

Fellowship aims

  • To provide the fellow with broad post-doctoral and multidisciplinary training in the area of pediatric psychology, with a focus on pediatric gastroenterological disorders, including feeding disorders and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • To provide the fellow with a strong working knowledge of biopsychological research in pediatric GI disorders.
  • To provide the fellow with skills necessary to design and conduct psychosocial and behavioral research in pediatric GI disorders.
  • To provide the fellow with advanced training in assessment and treatment (individual, family, and group-based) for children and adolescents with chronic illnesses and disabilities and their families.

Fellowship Timeline             

The duration of the fellowship is 1-2 years, contingent upon satisfactory progress.  A two-year duration is preferable.  The fellowship will initiate September 1, 2006.

Research, Academic/Didactic and Professional Activity Plan (50% Effort)

The fellow will participate in the following Research Activities (approximately 40% effort):

  • Review of Pediatric Psychology and Pediatric GI literature:  The fellow will be provided with a series of readings in the area of Pediatric Psychology (e.g., individual and family adaptation to chronic illness, adherence, empirically-supported treatments) and GI disorders including (e.g., feeding disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and abdominal pain.).
  • Study Collaboration:  The fellow will collaborate with the PI (Debra Lobato, Ph.D.) to coordinate several studies on family factors and treatment adherence in Pediatric GI disorders.
  • Manuscript preparation and submission:  The fellow will collaborate on manuscript preparation and poster submissions at national conferences and will be encouraged to take leadership role in   preparation of selected manuscripts and presentations.
  • Grant Writing:  The fellow will be expected to develop a grant idea and submit a grant proposal related to pediatric GI disorders by the end of the fellowship term.
  • Pediatric GI Research Meetings:  The fellow will be required to participate in weekly research meetings conducted at Rhode Island Hospital.

The fellow will participate in the following Academic/Didactic and Professional Activities (10% effort):

  • Post-Doctoral Seminars:  The fellow will participate in the APA Post-Doctoral Seminar Series (Wednesday) and the Research and Grant Writing Seminars (Friday) through the Brown University Postdoctoral Training Program, and the Grand Rounds Series.  The fellow also will participate in the Pediatric psychology Seminar conducted at Rhode Island Hospital.
  • Licensure as a Psychologist (Optional):  The fellow will make application for licensure, work towards successfully negotiating all aspects of the licensure process, and obtain licensure as a psychologist.

Clinical Activity Plan (50%)

Fifty percent of the fellow’s time will be devoted to clinically-related activities.  In order to ensure that the fellow receives a high level of clinical training in the area of Pediatric Psychology/GI Disorders, the following activities will be required during the fellowship:

  • Clinical assessment:  Individual and family assessment as indicated by referrals to pediatric psychology clinical services to include administration and interpretation of structured interviews and standardized assessments of global and specific functioning.  A rotation in psychoeducational and developmental testing is optional.
  • Treatment Services:  The fellow will complete rotations in each of the following core clinical services: pediatric consultation/liaison, pediatric emergency services, and outpatient therapy.  The fellow will complete rotations in the following services as determined by fellow interest, training goals, and supervisor discretion:  feeding disorders program, biofeedback, outpatient pediatric GI clinic, sibling group, weight management group, and pediatric partial hospitalization program.

Supervision and Evaluation

Supervision will be provided in the form of weekly individual research supervison (Drs. Lobato, Nassau, and Plante) and weekly individual supervision with a primary clinical supervisor for outpaitent therapy cases and monitoring of overall clinical responsibilities) and rotation supervisors.

At the conclusion and midpoint of the fellowship, the fellow and the supervisors will provide formal evaluations, and evaluations of the program relative to the goals and learning objectives of the fellowship.
