Brown Psychology Training Consortium
Clinical Psychology Internship
Evaluations
The primary objective of the Brown Medical School Clinical Psychology Predoctoral Internship Consortium is to provide an integrated year of predoctoral training which emphasizes both breadth and depth of clinical exposure. The overall goals are: (1) to ensure adequate levels of proficiency in the core aspects of assessment, therapy, consultation and clinical research within clinical psychology; and (2) to provide a beginning concentration in a particular area of clinical psychology. Interns are admitted into one of four areas of concentration or "tracks" within the training program: (1) Adult Clinical; (2) Child Clinical; (3) Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine; or (4) Clinical Neuropsychology. The internship year consists of three four-month rotations. Interns must complete two rotations within their identified track and another rotation outside of their track area, thereby assuring that breadth of exposure is achieved. Interns must meet the rotation specific competencies for the three four-month rotations.
The overall training objectives of the program reflect a commitment to the development of clinical psychologists who are scientist-practitioners with broad-based clinical skills
The goals and objectives of the Predoctoral Internship are implemented through a number of program components: (1) track-based rotations; (2) elective rotation assignments; (3) research placements; (4) seminars; and (5) the faculty advisory process. The particular experiences acquired will vary according to the Track in which the intern is based, the combination of rotations taken, and the nature of the intern's research placement.
Interns receive written evaluations twice during each of their three clinical rotations by their rotation supervisors. Evaluation is based on a detailed competency-based format which emphasizes the acquisition of specific clinical knowledge and skills. Evaluations occur half-way through the course of the rotation and at the end of the rotation. Adherence to APA ethical standards is also a criterion for passing each rotation.
An intern's performance at his/her research placement is also evaluated semi-annually. Both faculty supervisors and research placement supervisors rate the intern's performance. In an effort to continually improve the quality of the training experience, interns are required to evaluate their faculty supervisors for each rotation. These evaluations are completed by the interns at the end of each rotation and at the middle and end of their year long research placement experience.
The Internship Training Program maintains ongoing communication with each intern's graduate training program throughout the year. Letters are sent to graduate training programs in the middle of the Internship year which provide a brief overview of the intern's experiences to date, his/her general progress, as well as the experiences planned for the remainder of the year. At the end of the year, a summary of the intern’s experience and performance is sent to the graduate training program.
