Standard Program for ScB Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary concentration designed for students interested in applying the methods and tools of engineering to the subject matter of biology and the life sciences. It is jointly administered by the Division of Engineering and the Division of Biology and Medicine.

1. Thirteen Foundation Courses (all required):

  • ENGN 0030, 0040; MATH 0190; MATH 0170 or 0190; MATH 0200; BIOL 0200 or NEUR 0010; APMA 0330; CHEM 0330, 0350; APMA 0650 (or APMA 1650; SOC 1100; or PHP 2030); ENGN 0510, 0720, 0810; 1000, 1230).
    *Or other statistics courses with approval of the concentration advisor.

2. Additional Engineering courses (any two of the following):

  • ENGN 0310, 0410, 0520, 1210, 1490 or 1570.
    *Or other courses with approval of the concentration advisor.

3. Additional Biology courses (any two of the following):

  • BIOL 0470, 0530, 0800, or 1050, or 1100 or 1190; NEUR 1020 or 1670.
    *Or other courses with approval of the concentration advisor.

4. Bioengineering electives (any three of the following):

  • BIOL 1080, 1090, 1120; ENGN 1110, 1120; BIOL 1140; ENGN 1210**, 1220 or 1490**; BIOL 1800; PHYS 1610; BIOL 2110, 2130, 2140; ENGN 1930B, 1930P.
    *Or other coures with approval of the concentration advisor.
    **Unless already taken to satisfy requirements under "Additional Engineering Coures."

5. Independent Study (Directed Research) - One semester required; two semesters strongly recommended.

  • BIOL 1950/1960; ENGN 1970, 1971.
