Honors in Biology Programs:

Honors is a designation awarded upon graduation and based on a substantial individual Research Activity as well as distinguished academic performance. Click here to download detailed Guidelines.

Undergraduate research for credit is via BI 1950/1960 course numbers. The research can serve as a basis for the Honors thesis. The research project can also stand on it's own, if Honors is not pursued.

The criteria for completion and awarding  of Honors is as follows:

* Application for Honors Candidacy based on an approved research project supervised by Brown faculty
* Oral or Poster Presentation
* Honors Thesis (based on Research Project outcomes)
* Quality grades in concentration (Mainly A's, B's, and S-distinction)
* Positive evaluations and approval from the faculty research sponsor and second faculty Reader, plus recommendation from the Associate Dean of Biological Sciences.

The designation Honors in (your concentration) will appear printed on your diploma.

Timeline:

1) Application should be filed  by the end of your seventh semester, unless special exception has been granted.

2) Thesis should be submitted to Sponsor and second reader in order that there is sufficient time for reading, review and changes.

3) Final version should be approved by the end of April.

4) Oral presentation should occur before the end of April.

5) Honors approval forms will be mailed out by Biology Undergraduate Affairs office in April and must be received with signatures and evaluations completed by the end of April.
