After completing this CME activity, physicians should be able to:

  • Describe the phenomenology of drug-induced acute dystonia, akathisia, parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia.

  • Give reasons why these extrapyramidal syndromes may go unrecognized in patients receiving antipsychotic medications.

  • Identify patients at increased risk for these syndromes.

  • Describe effects these syndromes can have on daily living and compliance with therapy.

  • Explain prevention and treatment or management methods for each syndrome.

  • Rank the "atypicality" of the newer antipsychotics based on their effects when used in patients with Parkinson's disease.
