Biostatistics

The Ph.D. program in Biostatistics is designed to train independent investigators who will develop new quantitative methods and underlying theory, and make innovative applications to substantive and demanding scientific problems in biology, medicine, public health and social sciences. In addition to completing core courses in theory and methods of biostatistics, Ph.D. students are required to develop expertise in a cognate area (e.g., economics, molecular biology, or epidemiology). The Sc.M. program is designed to provide practical training in advanced biostatistics for those contemplating a career or advanced study in fields that emphasize statistical and quantitative expertise. Brown undergraduates are eligible for a fifth-year program that allows completion of the Sc.M. in one year. Major areas of faculty research include Bayesian inference, diagnostic test evaluation, causal inference and missing data, longitudinal data, multilevel modeling, and bioinformatics. Faculty are also active in collaborative projects in in areas such as molecular biology, diagnostic imaging, sociology, clinical trials, behavioral science, HIV/AIDS, and health policy. Funding via fellowship, teaching assistantship and research assistantship is available for those admitted to the PhD program. Application deadline is December 15 to receive full consideration for funding. For more information, please contact Joseph Hogan, Graduate Program Director (jwh@brown.edu)
