ADOLESCENT CLINIC

Adolescent patients (ages 12 to 18 years) are initially evaluated Monday-Friday from 1:00-4:00 pm and on Tuesday and Friday from 8:30 am-noon on the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital , in an area separate from the PPCU. General medical care, including gynecological as appropriate, will be given. Patients need not be accompanied by their parent(s) or guardian. The Tuesday afternoon session is a Teen-Tot Clinic for adolescent parents and their children. Pediatric subspecialty, psychological, psychiatric, and social service consultations are obtained when indicated.

CARDIOLOGY CLINIC

(Dr. Ziegler, Dr. Kochilas, Dr. Feit, and Staff, 444-8484)

Patients with congenital or acquired cardiac disease are evaluated and followed in this clinic. In addition, increasing numbers of patients are being screened for familial hyperlipidemia and hypertension. The facility is concerned with both diagnostic work-up and treatment. Cardiac structure and function are assessed by electrocardiology, echocardiology, Doppler ultrasound and exercise treadmill testing.

For the student, the program stresses auscultation, ECG interpretation, embryology, and the natural history of congenital heart disease. For residents, introductions to non-invasive diagnostic techniques, cardiac caterization data, cine-angiographic interpretations, and timing of surgical intervention will be offered.

This clinic is held at the Coro building on the third floor west wing.

DIABETES/METABOLISM CLINIC

This clinic is held at the Coro building on the third floor west wing every Monday afternoon. Since management of children with diabetes is primarily an ambulatory responsibility and requires continuity of medical supervision, each patient is assigned to a specific house officer who will be the primary physician. He/she should be available on a daily basis for questions. The senior staff, nursing and nutrition staff will provide consultation and general backup.

The pediatric house officer or medical student is also involved in the initial evaluations and follow-up care of the children referred with other possible or documented metabolic disorders.

ENDOCRINOLOGY CLINIC

This clinic is held on the third floor of the west wing in the Coro building every Wednesday morning and afternoon. There is a MANDATORY PRE-CLINIC CONFERENCE at 9:00 am on the the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital, pediatric house officers assigned to the clinic will present and discuss with the attendings the complete history of each patient scheduled. House officers and students are responsible for reviewing each patient's chart before the pre-clinic conference.

Patients scheduled for this clinic are examined and evaluated, initially by the pediatric house officer and medical student. After the patient has been examined, the house officer and student will present the case to the attending.

GASTROENTEROLOGY CLINIC

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic is located on the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital

and is held every Tuesday afternoon. Patient population includes infants with chronic diarrhea, children with abdominal pain, children with inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease and various other complaints. Students will be provided the opportunity to examine and take the history with the attending. It would be beneficial to read the section on chronic diarrhea in a general pediatric text prior to coming to this clinic.

PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The pediatric area of the Emergency Department provides the pediatric house officer the responsibility for the initial evaluation of all patients under age 18 (except those with a specific wish to be seen by another physician). The victim of alleged rape will be evaluated initially by the pediatric house officer, along with the gynecologic house officer. The pediatric house officer is encouraged to consult more senior pediatricians, full-time emergency physicians, and/or other specialists whenever dealing with a very ill and/or confusing patient.

The pediatric medical student will work with the house officer. He or she will often perform the initial evaluation of the child or adolescent who is without evidence of severe illness, but all patients will ultimately be evaluated by the house officer.

PEDIATRIC PRIMARY CARE UNIT (PPCU)

Located on the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital, this clinic offers care Monday-Friday from 9:00 am-4:30 pm. Staffed by pediatric house officers and medical students, with direct supervision by general pediatricians. The entire house officer program is divided into teams. Each house officer follows their own panel of patients.

RHEUMATOLOGY CLINIC

The Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic meets on Friday afternoons on the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital. The purpose of the clinic is to provide evaluations to the children with possible or documented rheumatologic conditions. All patients are preliminary evaluated by a pediatric medical student or resident, with the attending ultimately discussing and evaluating each patient.

HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY CLINIC

The Hematology Oncology Clinic is located on the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital. Clinic is held Monday - Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 PM. Patients scheduled for this clinic are examined and evaluated, initially by the pediatric house officer and medical student. After the patient has been examined, the house officer and student will present the case to the attending.

PARTIAL PROGRAM

Located on the lower level of the Potter Building on the Rhode Island Hospital campus, the Partial Hospitalization Program at Hasbro Children's Hospital offers an intensive approach to the treatment of medically ill children. Our patients have psychosocial issues that prevent the effective administration of medical care, or have concurrent psychiatric illnesses that affect their response to typical medical treatments. A multi disciplinary team of medical and psychosocial health care providers addresses each child's medical and emotional needs. The program is a collaborative effort between the department of pediatrics and the division of child psychiatry.
