The Inpatient Pediatric Clerkship:
A Guide for Medical Students



Responsibilities of Medical Students



  1. Preround on all patients, usually one-half to one hour before work rounds.

  2. Attend all work rounds and present your patients to the team leader.

  3. Write daily progress notes on all patients followed, and confirm this with the Intern.

  4. Be in close communication with the Intern regarding the daily progress of shared patients and daily tasks.

  5. Examine your patients every day, even if the Intern also does the exam.

  6. Be available (i.e. physically present) on the floors -- especially when your team is admitting.

  7. Check with the team leader before leaving the floors.

  8. During night calls, be available and visible until 10:00 PM (midnight on Friday and Saturday), stay overnight if room is available. You should take call with your team every fourth night.

  9. Be responsible for knowing about the care of your patients (i.e. Know Your Patients).

  10. Hand in to the Team Leader and Preceptor one-two H&P's

  11. The student should accompany the housestaff when you first see a new patient. The plan will then be discussed, and you should then return to see the patient and complete your H&P.

  12. Check with the Intern before giving information to patients and their families.
