Tuesday Conference Series
To the students from the clerkship director: In an ongoing effort to provide you with a comprehensive
pediatric curriculum, a conference series is offered
at the end of the day on Tuesdays from 4-5 PM. These conferences
are brief (20-30 minutes), student-led, and
disease-focused, covering common pediatric problems, especially
those seen in the outpatient setting. These
conferences are to be directed/presented by individual students
with the aim that all students can hear about and
discuss management of the particular disease entity. A suggested
format is to begin with a brief case presentation
of a child with the problem in question, preferably of a case you
have encountered in the outpatient setting, and
then a brief discussion of 3-5 take-home points. No lectures
please. Rather than a handout, a single good
review article photocopied for each of your colleagues is suggested.
Consult with your preceptor, inpatient or
outpatient attendings or residents or me prior to your presentation
re: sources of information and possible key
points to focus on. Because an interactive format is most likely to sustain interest,
you should keep your comments brief and be
prepared to shed light on your colleagues' inquiries by virtue of your
reading on the topic. Student(s) who sign
up for "Case Presentation" should come prepared to present and discuss
a case from the outpatient setting that
illustrates a problem listed in the curriculum. I will attend most of
these conferences and will offer my thoughts
on the problems discussed as necessary. One afternoon will be devoted
to issues that concern adolescents. The
students who sign up for the Adolescent Issues date are asked to contact
Dr. Riggs by paging her (444-0635) to discuss cases/topics
for presentation at the conference on Thursday, July 21,
2005 at 4:00 devoted to
"Adolescent Issues" Hasbro room 151.
