Bio-Med 450: The Pediatric Clerkship

Welcome!

Welcome to the six week pediatric clerkship. This will be your main exposure to the field of pediatric medicine in the course of your medical school experience. You will also have the opportunity to determine whether pediatrics or a medical field that includes care of children is suitable for you. To help achieve these goals you will be spending three weeks on the inpatient service at Hasbro Children's Hospital and three weeks in a variety of Pediatric Ambulatory Settings. To make the most of this limited time, we would like to ask you a few questions before you begin the clerkship.

To provide an adequate number of quality outpatient experiences, we sometimes find it necessary to send students some distance from the hospital. (Taunton, New Bedford, Massachusetts, Wakefield, RI ). Please let us know ahead of time if you have a transportation problem.

If you know of a particular outpatient site you would like to attend please indicate your preference to us. It is not always possible to accommodate your choices but we will try.

Also, you will be assigned to a few outpatient sub-specialty clinics. Again, it will not always be possible to accommodate your choices but we will try. Pediatric sub-specialty clinics to which we sometimes assign to students include:Child Development, Cardiology, Diabeties, Endocrine, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Sleep Clinic, and Urology.

The pediatric clerkship is brief, and for that reason we ask you to make an effort to attend the sites and educational opportunities which are made available to you. If you anticipate any scheduling conflicts please let us know ahead of time and we will attempt to take that conflict into account when we arrange your schedule. Also, if you anticipate involvement in a longitudinal elective during the clerkship please indicate the usual day and time. (While rotating through pediatrics we suggest a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoon excluding the day of the exam.)

Everyone needs a computer ID code to gain access to the RI Hospital computer system for laboratory results prior to the clerkship. We will need your name and your mother's maiden name. Please contact Ms. Helene Felici at 444-3406 with this information. Also please bring to the clerkship, a record of all your immunizations including documentation of either immunity to or vaccination against Varicella.

There is no required or recommended pediatric text book. A variety of high quality pediatric text books are available to you The two that are most commonly used are Rudolph's text book of Pediatrics and Nelson's text book of Pediatrics. Both of these are available in large text book formats but are also available in condensed paperback conversions. You might go to the bookstore ahead of time to see what is available and if you do not find something suitable ask the bookstore to order it for you. Also, text books are available here at the hospital.

Again, welcome to pediatrics and we look forward to providing you with a satisfying learning experience.

Sincerely,

Randy Rockney, M.D.
