Online Computer-based training module: Protection of Human Research Subjects "The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Committee on Human Research computer-based training module was developed in response to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) directive requiring education and training on the protection of human research subjects for all investigators. The Public Health Service (PHS) later extended the requirement to all persons supported by PHS funds. The successful completion of this module is designed to fulfill the PHS requirement.

New Ethics Guidance document - A draft of the document "HIV Prevention Trials Network Ethical Guidance for Research" is now available for review and comment. "The document is built on HPTN aspirations and synthesizes best practices and accepted standards for the conduct of ethical research."

OHRP has a new director - Bernard A. Schewetz, D.V.M., Ph.D, was named acting director of the U.S. DHHS Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) and will assume this position 3 February 2003.

Electronic FWA filing now possible - Federalwide Assurances (FWA) may now be submitted to the OHRP electronically -NEW filings only. "Electronic submission of the FWA will expedite processing of the assurance by OHRP. With the electronic submission process, notification of approval occurs by e-mail automatically as soon as OHRP approves your submission… OHRP encourages institutions to submit the FWA electronically rather than by mail."
