Research Interests:

Hepatitis B and C viruses are major causes of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Our laboratory is interested in identifying hepatitis B virus receptors and co-factors. Using duck hepatitis B virus as a model, we have recently identified glycine decarboxylase (p120) as a binding protein to the pre-S envelope protein. Its specific binding to a few truncated pre-S peptides and correlation of its expression with active viral replication implicate it as a virus co-receptor. Studies are ongoing to define whether p120 is essential for the viral life cycle. In addition, there are ongoing studies that identify cellular proteins that may be associated with hepatitis C virus structural and nonstructural proteins in an attempt to better understand the pathogenesis of HCV induced hepatocellular carcinoma.
