Clinical Interests:

I am interested in diseases of the stomach, small bowel, and colon including gastric and colon cancer.

Research Interests:

My research interests are in the pathogenesis of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract in general, and gastric cancer in particular. The causes of most gastrointestinal tract cancers remain obscure, but recently there has been considerable interest in the role of a bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, in gastric cancer. This organism is found commonly in the human stomach and is highly adapted for infection lasting decades. Its presence is associated with peptic ulcer disease, chronic gastritis and gastric adenocarcinoma, but how this bacterium causes disease is not well understood. We have been examining interactions between H. pylori and the human gastric epithelium which may be relevant to the pathogenesis of these diseases.

Helicobacter pylori bacteria attach to gastric epithelial cells and induce specific changes in cellular function. Our research is focused specifically on mechanisms by H. pylori alters apoptosis and cell cycle progression in gastric carcinogenesis.
