Brown University Global Health Scholarships

Brown Interdisciplinary Framework in Global Health
Call for Applications

The Framework in Global Health at Brown University announces the availability of funds to support Global Health Scholarships for undergraduate students, medical students and residents, and MPH and PhD graduate students. Successful applicants will receive up to $3,500 to support global health research, service and advocacy activities directly linked to Brown University faculty scholarly projects. The Global Health Scholarships will enable students and trainees to work on global health issues in foreign sites for a minimum of 8 weeks. However, applications for work at Brown University will be considered as long as they pertain to a Faculty mentor’s global health scholarly work.

The Framework in Global Health at Brown University is supported by an educational grant from the Fogarty International Center at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The overall objective of the Framework for Global Health Program is to stimulate students and faculty to engage in multi/interdisciplinary global health activities. Interdisciplinary global health emphasizes the joint importance of biomedicine, public health, social science, engineering and the humanities in understanding global health inequalities. Interdisciplinary perspectives are also necessary for designing interventions to reduce health inequalities.

An applicant must:

  1. have a demonstrated interest and/or have engaged in activities related to global health
  2. have taken or propose to take academic courses in preparation for global health work
  3. have a proposed plan for global health work with a scholarly activity related to research, service, or advocacy
  4. describe the Brown University faculty mentoring for the proposed global health activity, and provide a required letter of support from the mentor.

Those receiving Global Health Scholarships will be required to participate in regular group meetings with other Global Health Scholars and faculty both before and after the proposed activities. The purpose of the meetings before departure is to communicate effectively about the planned activities, improve the proposed activities based on detailed comments from other Scholars and faculty, and receive guidance about the ethics of conduct of human subjects research. The group meetings afterward will focus on presentation of the actual activities, preparation of scholarly reports of the activities as theses or publications, and reports to the foreign host and sponsor institution.

The Global Health Scholarship will be for a maximum of $3,500 to be used for travel, living costs, and expenses related to the conduct of the proposed activity. The applicant and the Brown faculty mentor must describe additional existing and possible sources of funding for the proposed activities.

Applications are due on November 1 and February 1 annually, and may be submitted electronically to Camille C. Carino, Program Coordinator, at Camille_Carino@brown.edu or in paper to Ms Carino at The Framework in Global Health, International Health Institute, Box G-S121.  Recommendation letters should be sent electronically directly to the Program Coordinator from the relevant faculty member; paper copies should be submitted in a sealed envelope.  Inquiries about the application and other administrative details should be directed to Camille Carino as Program Coordinator; inquiries about opportunities to partner with Brown faculty can be sent to either Susan Cu-Uvin, MD (email: scu-uvin@lifespan.org) or Stephen T McGarvey, PhD, MPH (email: Stephen_McGarvey@brown.edu).

Please note that while Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval does not need to be submitted with your application, it will in fact be required before the award is made.  Applicants should therefore begin to familiarize themselves with the Brown IRB application process as soon as possible.  Furthermore, please note that a Brown IRB approval is necessary, even if the applicant is employed by another institution (e.g., Lifespan), since the Framework funds are administered through Brown.  It is recommended that you contact the Brown IRB to ascertain whether the work you propose in your application requires IRB review.  Please see http://research.brown.edu/rschadmin/hrpo.php for more information, or contact the staff at the Brown Research Protections Office directly at (401) 863-3050.
