Basic principles of ploymer science and its application in medicine. Topics include basic polymerization chemistry, kinetics of polymerization and depolymerization with emphasis on bioerodible polymers, characterization of ploymers by physical methods, bulk and surface properties, behavior of polymers in solutions, crystallization, gelation, and liquid crystals. Hands-on experience with polymer characterization. Oral presentation of a topic of personal choice. Note: In biology programs, this course is for physical or realted science credit only. Prerequisite: One semester of organic chemistry.
