Recommendation for extension of time period (Promotion Time Clock) for promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor in the Academic Clinical Faculty Tracks.

The Warren Alpert Medical Schoolof Brown University recognizes that family or personal medical situations may impose competing demands for significant amounts of a faculty member's time and thus may interfere with the faculty member's ability to achieve promotion in the usual (3) three-year terms.  As such, this proposed policy would permit some flexibility in the usual "promotion time clock" by authorizing the granting of a limited extension for faculty members who require additional time to meet these demands.

Policy:

Faculty members who require extended leaves for personal medical problems or who require an extended leave for childbirth and/or associated parental leave, adoption of a child or caring for a sick child or close family member may request three one-year extension of the current term or concurrent with the period of time needed for the medical leave, maternal leave, parental leave, adoption or provision of care to the sick child/family member.

Extension requests will be granted only for one year, not less, and thus the deferral is for one academic year.

Implementation:

  • An individual faculty member requesting an extension will submit the request in writing with an explanation of the need for the extension to the department chair.
  • The department chair will document his/her recommendation and then forward the request to the Office of BioMed Faculty Affairs (BMFA).
  • The Dean of Medicine will be asked to review and approve the request.  If approved, a letter will be sent to the faculty member's institution requesting approval and assurance of continuing support for  the additional year.
  • Upon assurance from the member's employing institution of continuing salary support for the additional term, the BMFA will notify the faculty member and department chair in writing when the request has been granted.

When and if the individual has taken an unpaid leave of absence from his/her employer, but the appointment continues, the same shall be communicated to the BMFA.
