CONFERENCES

  • MONDAY MORNING CONFERENCE - Mandatory program-wide resident conferences take place
    7:30 am - 12:30 pm Mondays:

    7:30—8:00: Rotating content in a four-week cycle
    Every other week: Gross/microscopic presentation of selected cases from the autopsy and
    surgical pathology services
    Every fourth week: Journal club
    Every fourth week: Meeting with Director and Codirector

    8:30—9:00: Review of matters handled by the on-call pathology staff and residents. The directors of the various lab divisions conduct these sessions in rotation.

    9:00—9:30: Clinical pathology. Lecture or interactive format
    Topics include clinical chemistry, transfusion medicine, hematopathology, microbiology,
    laboratory management, and clinical pathology subspecialties such as cytogenetics, flow cytometry,
    etc., with active discussion of test methodologies, patient data, and quality assurance
    issues.

    9:30—10:30: Anatomic pathology
    Systematic coverage of anatomic pathology topics over the course of a year.

    10:30—11:30: Interesting case conference
    Attending pathologists discuss current surgical pathology cases of interest. Selected slides from each case are made available—with history, but without diagnosis—for residents to study in advance of the conference.

  • GRAND ROUNDS - ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY - Held every other Thursday at 4:00 pm
  • GRAND ROUNDS - CLINICAL PATHOLOGY - Held every other Thursday at 4:00 pm
  • INTERESTING CASE CONFERENCE - Held every Wednesday at 8:00 - 9:00 am
  • HOT SEAT CONFERENCE - Held every other Thursday
  • AUTOPSY BRAIN CUTTING - Held biweekly at 2:30 PM at Rhode Island Hospital and is mandatory for residents on the autopsy rotation. Residents not currently on the autopsy rotation whose autopsy brains are being cut are strongly encouraged to attend. This is a working conference where routine and low -complexity brains from autopsies are sectioned and examined.
  • RESIDENTS HOUR - Weekly at 4:30 PM on Friday, is an informal conference organized by the residents. Typically one resident makes a presentation to the group. The format is pizza party.

  • Rotation-specific conferences are held at participating hospitals and are mandatory during those rotations
    (see individual rotation description).

  • Numerous clinical and research conferences, including general and specialized tumor boards, are held weekly in participating hospitals, and residents are encouraged to attend and participate when possible.
