Rotations
The four years of combined AP/CP training includes 27 months of required rotation in anatomic pathology, 15 months in clinical pathology and 6 months of electives (must include 3 months of CP to satisfy 18 month anatomic board requirement).
First year residents have primary responsibility for autopsy pathology and make use of this opportunity to develop skills in gross and microscopic examination and clinicopathologic correlation. While on autopsy rotation, first-year residents also assist with intraoperative consultations (including frozen sections) on the surgical pathology service. Surgical pathology rotations, per se, begin in the latter part of the first year. Clinical pathology also commences in the first year, typically with a major three-month rotation. The remaining three years contain a mix of AP and CP rotations, both required and elective, tailored to the needs and interests of each resident within the constraints of the staffing requirements of the autopsy and surgical pathology services. The bulk of the elective time is typically reserved for the third and fourth years and may be used for research or clinical rotations.
