Eight institutions currently participate in training pathology residents:
These participating institutions are responsible for the majority of health care delivered in Rhode Island and adjacent areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut. They have approximately 1,500 hospital beds and include 95,000 square feet of diagnostic and 25,000 square feet of research space. All of these institutions are located in the Providence metropolitan area and are w ithin 10 minutes travel time of one another. All of the participating pathology departments and their staffs are committed to the education of residents and fellows. We believe this is a particular strength of our program, because residents have the opportunity to work in large, medium-sized, and small institutions, and to work in differently structured pathology departments. Our residents typically participate in rotations at each of the five hospitals, perform biomedical research, and teach medical students at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. In this way our graduates are exposed to a broad range of clinical and academic experiences which can prepare them for a career in academic pathology or in clinical practice.
The approximate volume of annual testing in participating institutions is as follows:
Microbiology Tests
Autopsies (exclusive of forensic autopsies)
Bone Marrow Specimens
Chemistry Tests
Cytogenetics Tests
Cytology Specimens
Forensic Autopsies
Hematology Tests
Molecular Pathology Tests
Surgical Pathology Specimens
Transfusions

Fellowships in several areas of pathology are currently offered in our department at participating hospitals:
- Gynecologic Pathology
- Neuropathology
- Pediatric pathology
- Surgical Pathology
- Gastrointestinal Pathology
Our recent graduates have successfully undertaken fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, surgical pathology, neuropathology, gastrointestinal pathology, gynecologic pathology, hematopathology, pulmonary pathology, and pediatric pathology. Approximately half have taken positions in academic pathology and half in clinical practice. Research and educational facilities include
- Brown Sciences Library (7,000 Journals and 450,000 books)
- Electron microscopy (scanning and transmission) facilities (Lifespan, MHRI, Brown)
- Confocal microscopy (Brown, Zeiss 410)
DNA sequencing facility (Brown, ABI 377)
- CORE Molecular (RIH)
