ROUTINE TRAUMA LABS
These pages are excerpted from the Trauma
Resident Handbook, Rhode Island Hospital Department of Surgery,
Division of Trauma - updated 2001. The policies herein are intended
to serve as guidelines only. Individual circumstances need to
be considered as there may be times when it is appropriate or
desirable to deviate from these guidelines. These educational
guidelines will be reviewed and updated routinely.

The following laboratory tests should be ordered for all pediatric
surgical trauma patients evaluated in the trauma rooms:
0-12 years of age
- CBC with differential
- Type and screen
- Type and cross for any patient with:
- SBP <70 for patients <4 y/o
- SBP <80 for patients 4-12 y/o
- Penetrating truncal injury
- Any patient going directly to the OR from the ED
- Urine dip (if positive for blood or protein, a UA must be
sent)
- Medical Examiner blood for Level I cases only
13-17 years of age
- CBC with differential
- Urine dip (if positive for blood or protein, a UA must be
sent), UCG for female patients
- Type and screen, type and cross for any patient with a SBP
<90, a penetrating truncal injury or any patient going directly
to the OR from the ED.
- Medical Examiner blood
The following laboratory tests should be ordered for all pediatric
surgical trauma patients evaluated in the trauma rooms:
- Coags for any patient with a GCS < 10
- Urine "Drugs of Abuse" toxicology screen
- Blood alcohol level
