SUMMER FELLOWSHIP FOR
THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES IN MEDICINE
Summer Fellowship for the Arts and Humanities in Medicine expands opportunities for student scholarship into new interdisciplinary areas and recognizes the value of the arts and humanities in medicine. Approximately two to five
summer fellowships are made available annually during the period from June to September. Brown PLME and medical students are invited to apply for the fellowship by submitting a proposal.
Stipend support for the 10 weeks is set at $3000, of which $500 is provided by the faculty member through his or her academic/research support. In cases where a faculty member does not have a source of supplemental support, students and sponsors may petition the SRA office for waiver of this requirement.Other employment is usually not authorized during the defined workweek tenure of the fellowship, and academic credit cannot be obtained for work performed under this form of support. However, it is permissible to use the work done during the fellowship as an element of a thesis to be presented toward a degree, and to apply for academic credit if the student decides to develop and continue the project as an independent study during the academic year.
Please note if you are interested in applying , you will need to identify a faculty sponsor/mentor at Brown. Your project must be conducted at Brown University or at an affiliated hospital/institution, under the direction of a sponsor/mentor with a Brown University faculty appointment [e.g. Instructor rank or above]. A faculty member may sponsor only one student (i.e., may submit a letter of support on behalf of one student only).
The student who is awarded this fellowship will submit a short written summary/report of his/her project by the first day of the fall semester. The faculty sponsor will complete a short evaluation of the student's experience.
Format and Guidelines
The application should include:
- Cover page with your name, class year, the name of your faculty sponsor/mentor and the title of your project description.
- Project description should be presented clearly in 2-3 pages.
- Describe the intent and goals (thesis) of the proposed summer experience within the context of the arts, humanities and medicine.
- Identify the field and genre(s) within which the context of the work will be carried out.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of and a sensitivity to the current literature and national issues regarding the arts and humanities in medicine.
- Delineate the 10-week time frame and activities planned for the summer fellowship.
- If applicable, include plans to extend the work beyond the defined fellowship period.
- Student background statement noting pertinent courses and experiences in the arts and humanities to indicate the appropriateness of the proposed project to your educational level
- Letter from your faculty sponsor/mentor addressing a brief evaluation of plans for the project, a formal statement that the necessary space, supplies, etc. will be available to you, and that arrangements have been made to provide you with faculty guidance, mentorship, and supervision. In signing the faculty sponsor's letter, the sponsor indicates that she/he has discussed plans for the project with the student and has approved it in its submitted form.
- If the project involves research on human subjects (this includes data collection through intervention or interaction, or conducting a secondary data analysis) or animals, students will be asked to submit documentation from respective Institutional Review Boards (lRBs).
