 Community Service Opportunities

Mali Health Organizing Project

The PLME Senate is proud to be involved with the Mali Health Organizing Project (MHOP), a group which was founded in 2006 by Caitlin Cohen ('08, MD'13), Lindsay Ryan ('06), and Erica Trauba ('07.5). These students saw firsthand the health situation in Bamako's slums, and the failure of international and government agencies to provide more than band-aid fixes. They created MHOP to help elected committees of slum residents design and implement their own sustainable health programs. Because the root cause of poor health is social exclusion, MHOP also acts as a catalyst to bring slum residents and their governments together, promoting mutually investment in health infrastructure. MHOP currently runs five health programs and will build a clinic serving 28,000 people and a trash disposal system serving 60,000 people. Ten students have akready done on-site internships with MHOP.

What can you do? Visit the Mali Health Organizing Project's website at http://www.malihealth.org. If you're interested, definitely consider raising money or fundraising for the MHOP!

Other opportunities: Every year, the PLME Senate's Community Service Co-Chairs find existing community service opportunities and create new ones for Brown students can engage in. We feel that community service is a rewarding experience that allows us to get to know ourselves better while simultaneously helping the community at large. Furthermore, many of our community service events have relevance to the field of healthcare, to which we will soon be dedicating our lives. With questions, e-mail our Community Service Co-Chairs Mansi Shah and Arune Gulati.

 PLME Study Groups

Our various PLME Senate Class chairs often organize study groups for classes that are popular here at Brown. These study groups, besides being a great way to prepare for exams, also allow us to get to know each other and to have a little fun while studying. Food is usually provided, so definitely stop by!

For the fall semester of 2007, we sponsored study groups for Biol0470 (Genetics), Chem0330 (Inorganic Chemistry), and Neur0010 (Introduction to Neuroscience) Check back soon for a list of study groups for the spring 2008 semester!

Open Opportunities with the PLME Senate

We're always looking for PLME students to get involved with the PLME Senate. The PLME Senate meets once every two weeks at Faunce 201, but our various committees often meet at other times to better plan our upcoming events. We encourage you to get involved by coming to our next meeting. In particular, our social and community service committees are always looking for new members to help us organize future events.

NEW! We're looking for PLME students who would be interested in joining the PLME Advising Committee. The Advising Committee will be a group of two students from each class (undergrad through med) who will meet and talk about how to better utilize the advising at each level. With questions, contact our co-president Geolani Dy.

Also, if you'd like to start a study group for any course at Brown, the PLME Senate may be able to help organize meeting times and even provide refreshments for each meeting! If you have any questions about the PLME Senate, definitely e-mail our co-presidents, Geolani Dy and Jenna Kahn. Hope to see you at our next meeting!
