The Substance Abuse Research Unit (SARU), under the directorship of Dr. Michael Stein, is dedicated to providing a multidisciplinary environment for clinical researchers to develop and execute large-scale projects designed to improve the health of individuals with substance use disorders. Housed on the Rhode Island Hospital campus as part of the Division of General Internal Medicine, the program is comprised of twelve faculty and doctoral-level professionals, including a statistician, database specialist, clinical interventionists and Project Managers responsible for supervision of the RA staff and the day-to-day operations of the unit. In addition, the research unit works collaboratively with a variety of medical and psychiatric services within the hospital system, with research groups throughout the Brown University community, including the Center for AIDS Research, the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, the Departments of Community Health, Psychiatry, the Women and Infants Outcomes Group, and with various city and state agencies. These relationships allow us to coalesce Brown University's collective expertise in clinical epidemiology, outcomes research, clinical trials and research methodology, and provide state-of-the-art treatment research for alcohol and drug users.
