MAPLE: A Brief Marijuana Intervention for Adolescent Women
Principal Investigator: Michael Stein, MD
Funding Agency: NIDA
Project Dates: 9/29/04 - 8/31/09
Project Status: Currently Enrolling
Objectives: The goal of this project is to reduce marijuana use and associated HIV-risk behaviors among young adult women.
Design: The primary aim of this project is to conduct a randomized clinical trial of a brief motivational interviewing (BI) intervention designed to reduce marijuana use among women age 18-24. Women will be recruited from a primary care clinic, and will be randomized into a BI condition or a control standard of care (SOC) condition. Women in the BI condition will receive a brief motivational interviewing session addressing marijuana use and its link to HIV-risk behaviors, followed by a 1-month booster session. Participants in both conditions will be interviewed at baseline and at 3- and 6-months following the baseline assessment.
Outcome Measures: Marijuana use days/frequency of use per day, HIV/STI sexual risk behaviors (unprotected sex, condom use, and number of partners).
