Project POWER: Power of Women Entering Recovery

Principal Investigator: Michael D. Stein, MD
Funding Agency: NIAAA
Project Dates: 10/1/03 - 9/30/08
Project Status: Currently Enrolling

Objectives: The goal of this study is to determine ways to reduce HIV risk behaviors among incarcerated women returning to the community. We suggest that the co-occurrence of alcohol involvement and HIV risk-taking, first addressed at a time and in a setting where personal re-evaluation is common, provides the opportunity to motivate the study participant to initiate changes in alcohol use and thereby enhance HIV risk reduction.

Design: This randomized clinical trial utilizes repeated measures over time to compare standard care plus a brief alcohol intervention (BI) to standard care (SOC) in incarcerated women who report hazardous drinking and HIV risk-taking prior to incarceration, and who are about to return to the community. The alcohol intervention will be motivationally focused and will be delivered in two 60-minute sessions. Alcohol use and HIV risk-taking will be assessed at baseline and at 1, 3 and 6-months follow-up.

Outcome Measures: Alcohol use, HIV risk behavior, predictors of change in alcohol use.
