Division of Otolaryngology
Department of Surgery
Brown University School of Medicine
MISSION
The program in Otolaryngology, under the direction of Joseph P. Bellino, MD, has committed to organizing a strong and cohesive clinical, academic, teaching and research program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The recruitment of a Neurotologist and a Pediatric Otolaryngologist gives the department the ability to provide both specialty and subspecialty care at Rhode Island Hospital. The affiliation with the Tufts-New England Medical Center (NEMC) ENT Department has resulted in the rotation of two ENT residents to Rhode Island Hospital. This is a valuable component of Rhode Island Hospital's academic center. The educational mission in this program has been formalized to include weekly Head and Neck TumorConferences, monthly conferences with both the Radiology and Pathology Departments, and a monthlyinter-disciplinary conference in Sleep Apnea. An adult ENT clinic and a pediatric ENT clinic are held on a weekly basis and are staffed by the residentsand an attending. Additionally, a bi-weekly oncology clinic is held, which is also staffed by the residentsand an attending. The Department hosts Grand Rounds, held on the first Saturday of each month, which include casepresentations followed by a featured speaker. A bi-monthly Journal Club is held, as well as a quarterlyCPC/Basic Science Meeting, which is part of the NEMC protocol.Through the Division of General Internal Medicine, residents elect a subspecialty in ENT in theambulatory setting. Also, students choose a one or two week elective in ENT and spend time in the office, clinics, and operating room.In training Otolalryngologists who will be recognized as highly accomplished in clinical, educationaland research skills, we will be able to enhance patient care and the educational experience for medicalstudents, residents, and physicians.
