Division of Plastic Surgery
Department of Surgery
Brown University School of Medicine
OVERVIEW
Brown Universitys residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, established in 1963, is a fully accredited, six year coordinated program. Two residents are accepted each year, through the internship matching program (NRMP), as 4th year medical students.
This program combines three years of general surgery, a transitional elective year, and two years of plastic surgery.
The first three years have a curriculum providing special rotations appropriate for the plastic surgeon-to-be, including a month on the Plastic Surgery service each year. It is encouraged that some investigative activity - lab or clinical research - be pursued during those early years.
The transitional, elective year is meant to offer some degree of flexibility to the resident, and could be made up of anything from a year of strong clinical rotations to a year of research, depending on the individual's strengths and weaknesses, interests and career plans. It always includes at least two months of plastic surgery.
Finally, the resident spends two years on the busy Plastic Surgery service, following which most residents take an additional year of subspecialty fellowship. Our last four residents have gone on to four of the most prestigious fellowships in the country.
The training program is based at the Rhode Island Hospital, where both junior and senior plastic surgery residents spend 9 months of each year. The remaining 3 months of each year are spent at both the Providence Veterans Administration Medical Center and the nearby Roger Williams Hospital. The program offers a busy and diverse clinical experience, with over 2,000 operating room cases per year. Four formal didactic conferences occur weekly and supplement the busy clinical program.
A large ratio of attending physicians to residents ensures the opportunity for developing close working relationships and one-on-one teaching. Dr. Jack Bevivino and Patrick Sullivan run the Craniofacial/Maxillofacial service, combining their backgrounds in dentistry and otolaryngology with advanced training in craniofacial surgery to provide expertise in the treatment of traumatic and congenital deformities of the head and neck. Dr. Cindy Rosenberg is an orthodontist on the Plastic Surgery staff. Drs. Lee Edstrom and Rick Zienowicz run the Hand and Microvascular service at Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Zienowicz staffs the VA Hospital, which includes head and neck cancer and a variety of hand and general reconstructive cases. Drs. David Barrall and Lawrence Bowen round out the faculty with their busy private practices. In addition, each year the Department invites four to six visiting professors, each of whom spends a couple of days listening to case reports and presenting both clinical and research seminars.
Research is encouraged but not required of trainees. Under the direction of Drs. Edstrom, Sullivan and Zienowicz, residents have presented the results of their clinical and laboratory investigations at both local and national forums increasingly over the last several years. Current research investigating fetal repair of a congenital cleft palate model in the goat is receiving national attention.
Plastic Surgery trainees graduate with a well-rounded experience in the full
range and scope of the specialty, and have been regularly accepted in the best
post-graduate fellowships. Our operative numbers have been more than adequate
in our site visit evaluations. They are well prepared to enter either private
practice, or academic plastic surgery.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
Dr. Armand Versaci, retired Clinical Professor of Surgery, continues to spearhead an enormously successful international effort, the Italian etc. etc., which has had international meetings in Italy and the in the U.S., attracting plastic surgeons from all over the country and Europe. This is an established liaison between the Brown University Division of Plastic Surgery, and the Italian Plastic Surgery Society, combining scientific and social aims in one semiannual event.
