GRADING POLICY

The student final evaluation will represent a composite of several items. These include:

  • Written team evaluations of the students performance on the surgical services
  • Performance on the oral examination given at the end of the clerkship
  • Performance on the written examination given at the end of the clerkship
  • Case presentation performance
  • Overall participation in all surgical lectures, conferences and seminars
The breakdown of the % for each component in the grading of surgical students will be as follows:
    Evaluations50% of grade
    Oral Examination20% of grade
    Written Examination20% of grade
    Case Presentation10% of grade
EVALUATIONS
All students will be required to have a minimum of three evaluations completed, one from each service/team that the student rotates. Each evaluation will be completed as a team evaluation and the Chief/senior resident of that service is responsible for coordinating the team evaluation during the last week of the clerkship. Additional faculty evaluations and other residents with whom you have worked with will make up the remainder of your file. You may check your file at any time over the eight weeks.

ORAL EXAMINATION
The oral examination will consist of two questions. One question will be formulated from The Manual of Surgical Objectives. One question will be formulated from the patient logbook. The oral exam will take a total of 30 minutes, 15 minutes for each question. A faculty member and a chief resident will conduct and grade the oral examination.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION
The written examination follows a USMLE format, is given on the last day of the clerkship. The examination will be allowed 2 hours for completion.

CASE PRESENTATIONS
Over the course of eight weeks, students will have a variety of opportunities to present cases / topics to their team, residents, faculty. The student is responsible to request to present to the team or at conference and must hand out evaluations to attendings and/or upper level residents for completion at the time of presentation. The highest scoring evaluation received for any one presentation will go toward 10% of the student grade.
