BROWN'S NINE ABILITIES

Throughout the clerkship, you should strive to integrate into your knowledge a continuous growth in the areas that have been defined as "Brown’s Nine Abilities" (see "An Educational Blueprint for the Brown University School of Medicine.")

I. Effective communication
(Written and oral language, listening, patient respect, information sharing)

II. Basic clinical skills
(History and physical exam, performance of basic procedures and diagnostic tests, familiarity with advanced procedures & diagnostic tests)

III. Using basic science to guide therapy
(Recognition of pathophysiology in clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention)

IV. Diagnosis, management, and prevention
(Application to individuals, families, and communities for disorder that may require surgical therapy)

V. Lifelong learning
(Recognition of constantly evolving nature of knowledge, intellectual curiosity)

VI. Self-awareness, self-care, and personal growth
(Appreciation of one’s own limits, values, and need for growth; response to criticism)

VII. The social and community context of health care
(Impact of sociologic, psychologic, and other non-biological aspects on health care)

VIII. Moral reasoning and ethical judgment
(Awareness of ethical dilemmas; ability to avoid conflict between one’s own ethical beliefs and choices made by patients and their families; understanding of medico-legal issues)

IX. Problem solving
(Ability to integrate knowledge, reasoning, and skills in implementing efficient solutions)
