Research at the Division of Surgical Research, Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital is centered in the laboratories located in the Nursing Arts Building and the 2nd floor of the Middle House and Aldrich Buildings. These facilities comprise 16,783 square feet of contiguous space including 11,807 square feet of laboratory space. The remaining space contains offices for the investigators, trainees and secretaries as well as a conference room/library and sterilization facility.

Current areas of active research include arginine regulation of cell function in healing wounds; trigeminal control of adrenal autonomic function; breast cancer; and PMN oxidative receptor injury in polymicrobial sepsis, among others. This research is supported by NIH grants, Rhode Island Hospital funds and Brown University / American Cancer Society Grants. Dr. Jorge Albina is the Director of the Division of Surgical Research and also serves as the Director of the Nutritional Support Service for Rhode Island Hospital. |
