Infant Care at The Mt. Hope YMCA Childcare Center
The Mt. Hope YMCA Childcare Center is expanding its services and will now offer care for infants 6 weeks to 18 months. A limited number of openings will become available as of September 1, 2009. These spots are offered at a competitive rate and with priority placement for Brown University employees. Located near the campus at 421 Hope Street, the center also provides quality childcare programs for toddlers and preschoolers. For details and more information.


Backup Care Program for Brown University Employees
The University´s Backup Care Program Administrator, Work Options Group, is now part of Bright Horizons Family Solutions. This benefit provides eligible employees with access to backup care when they experience a temporary breakdown in their normal care arrangements. Employees utilizing this program will have access to an expanded network that includes Bright Horizons childcare centers starting June 1, 2009. Also, copayments will be waived for center-based care during the month of June. Please see below for more information.

American Medical Women's Association (AMWA)
2010 Annual Awards

Elizabeth Blackwell Award - This award honors Elizabeth Blackwell, MD who was the first female doctor in the United States. Dr Blackwell was the first openly identified women to graduate from medical school (MD), a pioneer in educating women in medicine, and prominent in the emerging women's rights movement. In 1949 Elise S. L'Esperance, MD initiated the award to be granted to a woman physician who has made the most outstanding contribution to the cause of women in the field of medicine.

Bertha Van Hoosen Award - This award is named in honor of the Founder and first President of AMWA, and honors a woman physician who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to AMWA, and has been an active member for at least five years.

Lila Wallis Women's Health - This award is given in the name of one of AMWA's most beloved Past Presidents. Each year, the award is given to an individual whose lifetime achievements, accomplishments, motivation, mentorship, energy and enthusiasm for women's health, education, and research reflect the trailblazing achievements and influences in women's health exemplified by Dr. Lila A. Wallis.

Woman in Science Award - This award is given to a woman physician who has made exceptional contributions to medical science, especially in women's health, through her basic and/or clinical research, her publications and through leadership in her field.

Anne C. Carter Leadership Award - This award honors the memory of Anne C. Carter, MD, and is in recognition of a national student leader in AMWA . The award honors Dr. Carter's dedication to the welfare and success of all women medical students. Dr. Carter's life was a celebration of what women can achieve and contribute to others. For many years, Dr. Carter was Trustee of the Financial Aid Fund of AMWA's New York Branch 14, served as Chair of the Student Loan and Scholarship Committee, and on the AWMA Foundation Board.

Lila Wallis Women's Health Award - This award is given to an individual whose lifetime achievements, accomplishments, motivation, mentorship, energy and enthusiasm for women's health, education, and research reflect the trailblazing achievements in women's health exemplified by Dr. Lila K. Wallis.

Sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), this outstanding seminar is a three-day program designed for women faculty at the associate or full professor rank. It focuses on professional advancement and leadership development.

Early Career Women Faculty Seminar
July 10-13, 2010 - Ritz Carlton - Washington, DC
Sponsored by the AAMC, this three-day professional development seminar is designed for women assistant professors. The program focuses on academic medicine career building and skills in CV development and basic management skills. The accomplished seminar faculty offer inspiration and valuable career advice. Attendees are encouraged to develop career goals and objectives through the career mapping sessions. The seminar is targeted primarily at physicians, but is also pertinent for Ph.D. scientists.

Applications for the 2010 program will be available in late January 2010.

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine
(ELAM) 2009-2010

The Hedwig Van Amerigen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine ( ELAM ) Program for Women, 2009-2010 is a national leadership training program aimed at preparing senior women faculty for the highest administrative ranks at academic health centers. ELAM is a core program of the Institute of Women 's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Candidates must be at the associate professor rank or higher and have significant administrative responsibilities within their institution, with a strong potential for advancement.

The RAISE Project

The RAISE project (Recognition of the Achievements of Women in Science, Medicine, and Engineering), is a program of the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR). It "aims to ensure that qualified women are nominated for top national awards in science, medicine, and engineering," leading to greater recognition of the achievements of women scientists. Initial programs of RAISE include a web-based listing of national awards, a web list of women candidates and nominations of outstanding women for selected national awards. The project's focus is on "identifying women at stages of their professional development where outside recognition is likely to have a substantial career enhancing effect." Michele G. Cyr, MD, FACP, has been appointed to the newly created full time position of associate dean for academic affairs for the Division of Biology and Medicine effective June 15, 2009.  This position will oversee the Office of Biomed Faculty Affairs, as well as the offices of Women in Medicine, Graduate Medical Education, and Faculty Diversity throughout the Division. Among the responsibilities of the associate dean for academic affairs are the administration and leadership of the faculty appointments system, mentoring, and faculty development from an institutional perspective. 

After graduating from Bowdoin College, Dr. Cyr received her MD, with honors from Dartmouth Medical School, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha society.  She did her residency training at Maine Medical Center in Portland.  A professor of medicine and distinguished member of the Brown faculty since 1984, Dr. Cyr has been actively involved in University committees throughout her tenure.

Anna Lalor Burdick Program
The Anna Lalor Burdick Program, an initiative of the Lalor Foundation, seeks to educate young women about human reproduction in order to broaden and enhance their options in life. The foundation offersgrants to support one-time projects, ongoing projects, new projects and initiatives that demonstrate realistic plans to achieve greater financial self-sufficiency. These projects are in the area of reproductive education and focus on young women, including young mothers and preteens. Grants are generally awarded for one year only, though there are exceptions under special circumstances. A concept paper is submitted as the first step in the application process.
